Artist Spotlight: The Amazons

The Amazons sitting on a brown couch

Following the release of their new album '21st Century Fiction', The Amazons play SWG3 this November. We caught up with the band to talk about their album, upcoming show, and what they love about playing in Scotland...

Released in May, how does your latest album 21st Century Fiction reflect where you are musically right now, and what do you hope fans connect with when they listen?

I hope people connect with the tension of the record. This is the first album I’ve been able to acknowledge and articulate the battle I’ve been having with myself for the last 10 years. There’s a frustration in that. There’s a wider frustration too with the disparity between what we thought adulthood was going to look like and what it is actually turning out to be.

What’s a typical day like in the studio when you’re recording?

Wake up. Go to the studio. Do everything we can to find a groove. That’s where the magic happens. For that we need time and immersion, so it’s about trying to avoid distractions...and leaving.

How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard you before?

“If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint”.

What’s your favourite thing about performing in Scotland?

What was immediately clear when we first came here back in 2015 was that music is in your bones. Live music here feels like more than just speculative entertainment; it’s ritual, and the audience have as big a part to play than what's on stage. It’s what makes the shows feel more heightened and urgent. From the first song, the crowd and band are locked in. Aside from that, we love to continue our relationship with the cities we play in and dig a little deeper each time. We strike a great balance now when we return to Glasgow between revisiting old favourites and discovering something new.

Is there a dream venue you’ve always wanted to play?

It’s a close run between Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Colorado and the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. I love outdoor spaces that are close to nature. There is a magic and character to them, especially when you’re playing as the sun is setting.

Don't miss The Amazons on 2 November 2025 at SWG3. Find tickets on their artist page.
