Artist Spotlight | Lo Rays

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | LO RAYS

Ahead of their gig at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut on Saturday 28th March, we caught up with Lo Rays to chat favourite tracks, pre-show rituals and post-apocalyptic worlds.

We can't wait to see Lo Rays headline at King Tut's on the 28th - what can we expect from the show?

We are taking you on a journey through wastelands and underground bunkers from the post-apocalyptic world of our new EP, RE:BIRTH SEQUENCE, releasing 27th March. Our goal is to create an arena inspired rage show in the intimacy of a local venue. With performances from the incredible Becca Duke and Melissa Haywood, as well as VJ Veronica Petukhov's brilliant live visuals - we will build an immersive night of live music that draws you into the world of Lo Rays.

How did Lo Rays first originate?
Our singer Laura moved here from Finland to make music with the intention of following in the steps of her heroes Biffy Clyro. She formed the first iteration of the band in 2017, joined shortly by bassist Jonesy, but it wasn’t until meeting guitarist Scott and drummer Murray at a local gig that the band’s current lineup was finalised in 2021. Combined with Laura’s synth-leaning songwriting and Scott’s gritty metal riffs, Lo Rays’ current sound started to take form.

Are there any artists that inspire your music/songwriting? Who and why?
Stand out influences in our genre are Bring Me the Horizon, Bad Omens and Enter Shikari. Beyond this we also have a huge love for pop and hyperpop such as Charli XCX, Grimes and A.G Cooke. We want to take a little of that vibe and fuse it with our love of metal into something new.

Do you have a favourite track(s) at the moment?
Laura: I’ve been listening to a lot of HEALTH’s new album. Scott: I'm absolutely in love with this German three piece called Fjørt. Massive sounding riffs and energy that I've been digging recently!
Jonesy: V.A.N by Bad Omens, Infinite Mirror by LITE and Das Malefitz by Faunts
Murray: I've been listening a lot to Animalistic by Brotality

What is your pre-gig ritual?
Cigarettes, warm-ups and nervous poos.

What can fans expect from a Lo Rays show?
You can expect metal riffs, glitchy electronics, pop hooks and theatrics. We can’t wait to show you what we have been working on for so long!
