Plasticine are indie sweet and sour. An incandescent cacophony of face melting guitars delivered with husky candy floss vocals all wrapped in a Glasgow attitude. A mind meld of Smashing Pumpkins with Miley Cyrus and The Pixies with Avril Lavigne turning out pop hooks over a grungy wall of sound drenched in reverb. Comprised of frontwoman Summer Skye, brothers Connah and Bob O’Reilly-Mclean on bass and guitar and drummer Ross Howarth, Plasticine might only have been together since 2022 but their brief existence belies a far longer gestation in the mind of their precariously-talented chief songwriter. “I’ve always been in bands,” explains Summer, for whom music runs in the family - her mum’s old band were once signed to seminal UK indie label Cherry Red Records. “I started writing songs when I was about 9 or 10, but it was never really about wanting to follow my mum, because I was too young to understand what she did - my dad was probably the bigger influence, because he was the one who first got me guitar lessons.” Summer spent her teenage years quietly amassing a catalogue of songs but it wasn’t until she met Connah and Bob - and later Ross, that she finally struck upon the right vehicle for them. After dropping a series of tracks including dirty grunge sing along anthem ‘DO BAD BOYS GOT TO HEAVEN’ followed by the youthful battle cry of ‘Deep End’ then a heart bleeding ballad ‘On My Own’ Plasticine finished off 2023 with sublime cover ‘Pure Imagination’ and show no sign of slowing down their sass and swagger with further releases slated for 2024.
