SPEAR OF DESTINY was formed in 1983 after the demise of Kirk Brandon’s post punk iconic rockers THEATRE OF HATE. (Brandon had also, before TOH, been the main man in every punk rockers favourite band of that era The Pack)
Brandon and SOD have now notched up no fewer than twelve studio albums, 5 for major labels, 3 for big indie’s and of late releasing material through their own Eastersnow Recording Company.
November 2010 saw the release of the latest of these studio albums ‘Omega Point’.
Vive le Rock! Magazine said “Kirk Brandon is one of the UK’s most underrated songwriters and ‘Omega Point’ is a fine addition to his arsenal of epic albums”.
After a prolonged illness, now thankfully out of the way, Kirk has returned in earnest to the live fray. A 15 night tour with Irish heroes STIFF LITTLE FINGERS took place in March 2012 and was an amazing success for both bands. May 2012 saw Brandon resurrect THEATRE OF HATE with original members to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the ground breaking album “Westworld” which was produced by Mick Jones of The Clash. The show’s culminated in a sold out performance at London’s Islington Academy.
The current Spear line up sees Brandon joined by Craig Adams (The Mission, Sisters of Mercy and The Cult) on bass, Adrian Portas (New Model Army & Sex Gang Children) on guitar with new drummer Mike Kelly sitting behind the kit as Robin Goodridge has left to re-join Gavin Rosendale in BUSH. Kirk is also lucky enough to have the services of The Mission’s Simon Hinkler on keyboards when required.
The current SOD set list comprises of songs spanning the bands entire career with crowd pleasers like Liberator, Mickey, World service and Rainmaker leaving everybody with a huge smile on their face’s at the end of the night.
During the winter of 2012 SPEAR have once again been asked to join SLF on a 12 tour of the UK and Ireland, after these dates Kirk and the band will play a series of very special headline shows that will all pay homage to the band’s biggest album to date 1987’s “Outland”. The album heralded a top 20 chart place and spawned 3 top 40 singles including the legendary “Never Take Me Alive”.
Kirk is also the main stay in the original and now much copied ‘punk supergroup’ DEAD MEN WALKING, having laid dormant for several years, early 2013 could just see the band hit the road again, watch this space…
