Sunshine Social :
SunshineSocial is a collective of multi-instrumentalists from Glasgow, offering amelting pot of joyous indie pop that explodes into soul-driven catharsis. Thisyoung six piece fuse the intimacy and immediacy of open mic and the presenceand riotousness of a festival gig. They merge and layer a wide range ofgenre-crossing influences from Arcade Fire to Al Green; from Flaming Lips toFrightened Rabbit.
The bands roots lie in Glasgow’s vibrant singer-songwriter community; foundingmember Calum MacDonald having first developed and showcased hisauto-biographical compositions at the legendary Nice and Sleazy’s open micnight. When the annual Billy Kelly songwriting competition came callingMacDonald enlisted the support of his friends and open mic network, theresulting collaboration incorporated and celebrated their diverse musicaltastes and backgrounds, garnering critical praise and winning the 2010 award. With the award came the name change to Sunshine Social, the recording andrelease of their debut EP The Trek Home (recorded and produced by Roddy Hart)and a tour of the major Scottish cities.
The Skinnysaid of The Trek Home: ‘it's a fine start, full of folkish reflection withjaunty accompaniment… guaranteed to get your feet stomping… an accomplished debut.’
The band arecurrently recording their first full length LP with LA-based producer JudMahoney (Michael Jackson, The Underdogs, Mario Winans and Boys II Men). The unlikely combination of an international soul/R&B producer, andSunshine Social’s own brand of indie-pop looks set to create an album thatfulfils and expands upon the band’s early promise, bringing a wholly unique andnew sound to the Scottish music canon.
