Josh Record

Brixton based singer-songwriter Josh Record is going places – quite literally.

A travelling troubadour who, in the past few years, has driven to Turkey and to Norway; made a 9,000-mile trip across America from New York to Alaska in a converted school bus; worked with (and had his life changed by) local people in the slums of Nairobi and run a recording studio and mentored a group of teenagers on south London estates, in an area that for five years he called home.

He’s a great example of music’s unifying potential. “We started putting gigs on in the house. We'd invite these musicians to come along, cook a meal and play, and we'd have about 40, 50 guests, people would be sitting on the stairsIt was a strange old house, right in the middle of this estate, and we were constantly being told it was about to be knocked down. We found guns there, a samurai sword...and we had a homeless man living in the boiler shed outside.”

A similar sense of inclusiveness informs Josh’s approach to his own music. He could not, he says, imagine playing things safe, or by the usual rules. Life, Josh says, has to be about experiencing things.

The results were the EP’s ‘The War’ and ‘Bones’. Both were Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record and were of extraordinary beauty, power and depth. Their melodies, vocal harmonies, chord progressions and soundscapes are somehow both ancient and modern, its preoccupations – love, loyalty, mortality, solitude and community – perennial.

2013 saw Josh Record play shows with the likes of Lorde, Bastille, Michael Kiwanuka and London Grammar, and it does not stop there. So far this year he has not only played his second Communion headline show at Wilton’s Music Hall, but he has also been on tour supporting Sam Smith in the UK.

The new single ‘Pictures In The Dark’, produced by David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Everything Everything), is released on 16th March on Virgin/EMI.

Already tipped by The Sun, XFM, Itunes and VEVO, and with an album scheduled for the summer, 2014 promises to be another big year for Josh Record.
